Tips On How To Prepare For Your HGV Driver Training Licence
If you are interested in becoming a professional HGV driver, then you may have already started looking into the life of a lorry driver in the UK as well as the training that is required or you. Or you may have already conducted your own research on what you have to do to get your HGV driver training licence. If this the case, then you already know that there is a lot to learn and that you need to pass a number of different tests to ger a Class 2 or Driver CPC licence. There may be a variety of sections that are involved with these tests, yet the tests are divided into 2 parts which include practical and theory. In previous posts, we went into great detail about the theory parts, so in this post, we will share with you a few useful tips on how to pass your practical test.
Go Over the Basics
There are many things that you will need to remember before you can drive an HGV, and many more when you are in the process of aiming to pass your licence test. While you are in the stages of training, you will learn about all the basics from the beginning, and you will go over them so many times that they will eventually become 2nd nature to you. It is easy to forget when it comes to retaining everything you need to know, so it becomes important to go over the basic skills. These include checking on the controls before you start driving or adjusting the mirrors. These may be minor things, yet they will go a long way towards impressing your tester on the day of your test.
Get Enough Rest
You won’t be able to perform at your peak when you are feeling tired, agitated, or hungry. You need to take care of both your mental and physical health leading up to your HGV drivers test. Prepare for the test at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance by eating healthy and exercising to make sure you are at your peak when it comes to your physical health. Also, make sure you are getting enough sleep every night at least a week before your test. This will ensure that you are feeling well-rested and refreshed on the day of the test.
Make Sure You Are Dressed Comfortably
Making sure you feel comfortable in what you are wearing is essential when it comes to passing any type of test, and more importantly your driving test. If your clothes feel uncomfortable they could distract you and hinder your performance and thought processes on the day. While you are training you will learn about what types of clothing are appropriate when you become an HGV driver, and this is what you need to wear on the day of your exam.
Avoid Any Distractions
Distractions are the cause of accidents and deaths on the roads, and they are also something you need to avoid at all costs during your test. Make sure your phone is turned off or even leave the phone at home along with anything else that could cause a distraction. In this way, your mind is fully focused on your test and you will be able to give your very best effort.
Preparing is Key
Similar to other things in your life, your HGV driver licence test will go smoother when you come well prepared. Make sure you have gone over the highway code, and research any hints and tips of what is needed to pass. You should also ensure that you have received enough practical training and driving time before the test. Find out about what the tester is going to ask you during your test. You can also go around the testing area so you are more familiar with what is going to happen during the test. If you are fully prepared for the test you lower your chances of feeling overwhelmed and nervous and increase your chances of passing the test.
Practice the Different Manoeuvres
The last tip that we have is to practice all the tricky manoeuvres as often as you can. Your training will have gone over these moves countless times, but it never hurts to carry on practising until you feel completely confident. The test will involve parking, accelerating, and reversing, so ensure you have participated in enough practice sessions and that you can perform all these moves in different environments to the best of your ability.
