Parts of Tamil Nadu received heavy rainfall during the 24 hours ending on Saturday morning with Kothagiri topping the chart with nine cm and Coonoor recording seven cm, while parts of Coastal and South Interior Karnataka and Kerala recorded light to moderate rainfall.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the other main centres receiving rainfall (in cm) were Ongole-6; Arogyavaram -5; Amarapuram, Kiravati, Thalassery, Mandanapalle and Udyagiri-4 each; Chamarajanagar and Kolar-3 each; Bapatla-2; Mysore and Cuddapah -1 each.

Two troughs at work

Many places over Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep and a few places over Coastal Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Kerala, Mahe, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal also saw occasional showers as part of the ongoing bout of unseasonal February showers. Parts of East India, North-East India, West and Peninsular India too witnessed occasional thunderstorms.

The IMD attributed the unstable weather to a couple of troughs – one carved into the westerly winds and running down from North-East Bihar to South-East Arabian Sea across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and North Kerala while the other nestled in the easterly winds over West-Central Bay of Bengal from North Tamil Nadu Coast to South Odisha coast.

They will continue to trigger light to moderate rainfall over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe for three more days. Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe during next two days and over Lakshadweep area until Sunday.

A European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts outlook valid until Sunday said that there are still pockets with thunderstorm risk over East-Central India along a narrow corridor from Rourkela, Turumunga, Sambalpur, Rengali, Bolangir, Jeypore, Kirandul, Warangal, Khammam and Nizamabad across Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
