Though one of South America’s smallest countries, Ecuador has the continent’s second-highest number of Covid-19 deaths after Brazil. Nearly three-quarters of the victims lived in or around the steamy Pacific port of Guayaquil, whose mayor compared the devastation to “a Hiroshima bomb” hitting the city.
