Andrew Neil in talks to join Channel 4

However, Mr Neil took a break in June after presenting just eight shows saying he needed to recharge his batteries, before resigning in September.

Mr Neil later hinted on BBC’s Question Time that he left GB News because it wanted to imitate Fox News, the right-leaning US news network.

However, Angelos Frangopoulos, the chief executive of GB News, dismissed the claims, including reports by The Telegraph that Mr Neil had been frozen out of the decision-making.

A deal with Channel 4 comes as privatisation looms over the broadcaster. Civil servants are processing hundreds of responses to a government consultation over whether the Great British Bake Off broadcaster should be sold.

Ofcom, the media regulator, said earlier this week that the former Channel 5 chief executive, Dawn Airey, had been appointed as interim chairman of Channel 4. She replaces Charles Gurassa, who has become chairman of Guardian Media Group.

Channel 4 declined to comment.
